Construction to Begin Soon on Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre

The Twelve Apostles Precinct Redevelopment is moving forward, with Kane Constructions chosen as the head contractor for the new Visitor Experience Centre. The $126 million project, funded by the Geelong City Deal, is set to begin construction early next year, marking a major step in upgrading one of Australia’s most visited landmarks.

What the Project Will Deliver

The redevelopment will include:

  • A new Visitor Experience Centre with world-class facilities.
  • A rooftop garden offering breathtaking ocean views.
  • A Welcome Garden celebrating the culture of the Eastern Maar people.
  • Improved parking and pedestrian access for visitors.
  • Road upgrades to make it safer and easier for cars and buses to reach the site.

Marcus Clarke, CEO of the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, said the project will “harmonise with the natural landscape while strongly portraying Kirrae Whurrong culture and our shared history.” He added that the centre will embrace accessible tourism, allowing everyone to enjoy the Twelve Apostles, regardless of their ability.

Benefits for the Local Community

The redevelopment is expected to bring economic and employment benefits.

  • 90 full-time jobs will be created during construction.
  • Another 70 jobs will support planning, project management, and design.
  • Up to 50 ongoing roles will be available once the centre is open.

Federal Minister for Regional Development Kristy McBain said the project will “activate the visitor economy and create new jobs for locals.” Victorian Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney added, “We are transforming this iconic tourism destination, so it remains a much-loved and world-renowned Victorian landmark to be enjoyed for years to come.”

Community-Driven Approach

Local voices were key in shaping the design. Consultation helped ensure the upgrades respect the area’s natural beauty while improving visitor facilities. The project is part of the Shipwreck Coast Masterplan and aligns with the goals of the Geelong City Deal to revitalize the region.

David Rae, CEO of Corangamite Shire Council, welcomed the announcement, saying, “This redevelopment will bring world-class visitor infrastructure to our beautiful part of the coast. We’re eager to see the project move from planning to on-ground delivery.”

Next Steps

With Kane Constructions now appointed, work is set to start in early 2025. Visitors to the Great Ocean Road and Shipwreck Coast can look forward to improved facilities that aim to boost tourism, support local businesses, and protect the unique environment of the Twelve Apostles for generations to come.
